RISE Math Development Plan Title III Grant Award

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Lake-Sumter State College a five-year grant for $2.9 million under its Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP). This the largest single grant award in the College’s history. SIP helps postsecondary schools expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen their academic quality and build a framework to help students complete college.

The overarching purpose of the RISE Math Development Plan is to facilitate partnerships to accelerate high school students to college-ready status, while providing them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to participate in dual enrollment college credit courses before high school graduation. Specifically, through a collaborative partnership between the Sumter District Schools and Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC), the narrowed focus is on decreasing the number of district students needing math remediation in their first semester at LSSC. The partnership with the Sumter District will develop and support sharing of resources and performance data, in an effort to unify our ideals regarding processes, policies, and activities being implemented.

Along with admitting higher quality students, LSSC hopes to increase all students’ retention and degree completion by transforming the traditional math class to a new modularized, technologically enhanced curricular approach that fully supports a more individualized learning approach.
