Library of Congress Classification System

LSCC libraries use the Library of Congress (LC) classification system instead of the Dewey Decimal System that is frequently found in public and school libraries. The LC system uses letters instead of numbers to organize materials into 21 general branches of knowledge. The 21 subject categories (labeled A-Z, excluding I,O,W,X and Y) are further divided into more specific subject areas by adding one or two additional letters and numbers.

This system is in use at the Library of Congress and at many academic and research libraries in the United States. The chart below lists the 21 general subject areas and major subdivisions. Detailed information about the breakdown of any subject is available in the Library of Congress Classification Outline.

See Understanding Call Numbers for information on how the Library of Congress Classification system is used to assign call numbers to library materials.
